Star Wars has retconned a detail that will likely have a major impact on James Mangold’s upcoming movie
Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi. Not much is known currently about Mangold's movie, but the basis of the movie is that it will take place about 25,000 years before Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace and will explore the origins and establishment of the Jedi Order. While the origins of the Jedi Order have been explored in Star Wars Legends, there’s no telling what Mangold will keep and retcon from those stories that are no longer considered canon.
With Star Wars: The Last Jedi hinting at the Jedi Order’s origin, it will be interesting to see how James Mangold’s movie does or does not fall in line with what audiences have already learned. After all, it’s entirely possible that in more than 25,000 years, information was lost or stories were changed to fit a particular mold, something Luke Skywalker wouldn’t have known by the time The Last Jedi takes place. This makes it possible for Mangold and his Dawn of the Jedi movie to take advantage of one subtle retcon Star Wars has already put into motion.
